Keep fingers and gadgets away from the cables, pulleys and springs on a garage door. What appears to be an ”easy fix” can belie a more complicated repair, which should be left to the professionals who have the proper tools – and expertise.
These resemble tiny anchors, and are mostly admired for their affordability and reliable performance. They are best for lightweight doors since they will not necessarily stop a door from opening, but rather, prevent holes in walls. They are also aesthetically pleasing since they are small and more hidden.
Instead of ordering double glazed bifold doors and then adding blinds as an afterthought it is wiser to order such doors with integral blinds for a neater, smarter and ergonomic solution that looks neat as well. Manufacturers of quality bifold doors incorporate the blind into the glazing, fitting it neatly inside the frame so that it does not become an obstruction when one opens the door or gets in the way or gets tangled up and damaged in the process. The blinds are cut and precisely fitted inside the sectional frame to conform to the size of the glass glazing and the mechanism is neat and integrates well with the overall structure. Such integral blinds work smoothly and never get in the way of closing or opening the bifold doors.
If you have the extra space and do not mind going out into the weather to get to the house choose a detached garage. The extra space between the house and garage can be used for a patio or even a kitchen garden. From the garage to the home you could also build a nice aesthetically walkway. You will also need to decide if you want a one or two car garage and if you need extra room for storage. If you choose a simple one-car garage, a door company states that you will need a basic space of 12 feet by 24 feet. If you choose a two-car garage you will need to add another 9 feet by 18 feet of space for that extra car. You will need this much space so you can open the doors without scratching or damaging the car doors.
Unless you have ordered a pre-primed door, you will have to apply a stain-blocking primer – ideally two coats – to provide a base for the rest of your paint work. Pay special attention to the top and bottom of the door, which are particularly vulnerable to water penetration. Apply primer equally all over on both sides, not forgetting the cut-out holes for hardware. This will seal the timber and keep incoming moisture to a minimum, preventing swelling (which can make the door stick on the frame). Conversely, it will also help stop the door from drying out and shrinking in hot weather.
You can touch up the door knocker surface with brass restorer. This will help seal up any scratches that have been created over the years. The brass restorer doesn’t make the metal as shiny and attractive as before so you will need to find and use a specialised metal polisher that works with the alloy to regain its shine. You will need to make sure that lacquer is not present on the door as the brass restorer could potentially corrode it. This specific coating has to be removed before any cleaning takes place. Only remove the lacquer if it has been scratched or damaged.
The easiest way to keep your little ones from accessing things they shouldn’t is by adding a lock or bolt on to the door or cabinet of your choice. I personally went for antique bronze door bolts over locks as they were more in keeping with the tone of the house, and to be honest they looked easier to fit. However when fitting the bolt or lock, I would highly recommend you attach it where it is out of reach. When I first installed the bolts in the bathroom, I was naïve to think that with a bolt on the door the kids wouldn’t be able to get in. I’ll never forget the day when I walked into the bathroom and my youngest was sitting on the floor holding the bottle of toilet bleach. Luckily she couldn’t get past the twisted cap, but in that moment I had realised that the bolts needed to be a lot higher. That evening my husband came home and after he helped me put the kids to bed, we went round the house and moved all of the bolts up higher. Since then I have had peace of mind knowing my cheeky little monsters can’t reach substances that are hazardous to their health’s.
