You can touch up the door knocker surface with brass restorer. This will help seal up any scratches that have been created over the years. The brass restorer doesn’t make the metal as shiny and attractive as before so you will need to find and use a specialised metal polisher that works with the alloy to regain its shine. You will need to make sure that lacquer is not present on the door as the brass restorer could potentially corrode it. This specific coating has to be removed before any cleaning takes place. Only remove the lacquer if it has been scratched or damaged.
Flip down, or ”kick down”, door stops are just like the kickstand on your childhood bicycle. When they are needed to stop a door from opening or closing, they manually flip down into place. When they are not being used, they can be manually flipped back up against the wall or baseboard.
Another extremely attractive feature of uPVC is that it requires low maintenance A rinse with soapy water will retain uPVC frames appearing new for years. uPVC need no varnishing repainting or sanding. In fact this tough material can be scoured to remove the most stubborn of marks as uPVC doors and windows are tough to damage. On the other hand, wooden doors and windows are affected by termite and pests hence require to be changed and varnished regularly.
And, as if all of those choices are not enough, both bronze handles and stainless steel door handles are available in a number of finishes for you to choose from. Both varieties are available in matte or gloss finishes. Stainless steel can be finished in a range of colors – white, black, gunmetal gray, and more. Bronze can be finished with varying levels of the golden coppery shade that bronze is known for. Both can be tooled so that they have wonderful texturing. Again, the choice is yours and, you might be pleasantly surprised at the variety of designer handles you have to choose from when you look.
Barn doors are not as common and don’t have a modern home appeal. However it is rustic and gives the home a country likeness. This option is set up with a metal railing on the top. The barn door slides easily from side to side closing the necessary space and avoiding swinging.
Composite doors are more expensive than most timber doors initially but have the advantage of requiring no finishing or maintenance, saving time and money in the long run. You will also need to factor in the cost of door furniture. This can vary hugely, from around £10 for a pair of simple chrome-effect zinc handles to more than £100 for a superior set made of brass or polished nickel. You may find that a handle kit, comprising handles, hinges, fixing screws and a latch, is the most convenient solution.
The cheapest is not the best and the most expensive also is not necessarily the best. A Bifold door is not just panels put together; it is an entire system where design, engineering precision and choice of hardware plays an important in the door’s looks and performance just as much as the bifold door installation does. Buying a well known international brand with local support is a good option.
